The vibrant market town of Ulverston has a wide range of restaurants, cafes and bars, with a variety of cuisines available to suit every taste. We’ve selected some of the best places to eat in town, and within our small selection, we have Mexican, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, and traditional British cuisines, all within the town centre. Whether you’re looking for an atmospheric restaurant to enjoy a three-course meal, a café for Sunday brunch, or if you’d just like a good old fashioned chippy, there’s always somewhere to eat in Ulverston. The Mill
Here at The Mill, we offer a variety of dishes including classic pub food, sandwiches and snacks, as well as a delicious Sunday lunch menu, all using fresh, seasonal ingredients. The Mill also boasts three separate bar areas: the Cask Bar offers a wide choice of world beers, including some local favourites; the Terrace Bar is a great space to relax with a drink, either inside or in our heated outdoor terrace; and the Loft Bar is our exclusive cocktail bar, perfect for weekend get-togethers. Craig’s Kitchen at Virginia House
You may recognise Chef Craig Sherrington from BBC2’s Great British Menu 2018, and if you thought his culinary creations looked good on TV, you’re sure to want to pay a visit to Craig’s Kitchen at Virginia House. Craig’s Kitchen uses seasonal local produce, including sea bass from Morecambe Bay and beef from Penny Bridge, with the option of dining from their Early Bird, Brasserie, or Premeditated Indulgence menus. L’al Churrasco
This Spanish/Portuguese fusion restaurant serves delicious food in a tapas format, using responsibly sourced local produce. Their menu also adjusts accordingly with the changing seasons, so that they can make use of seasonal produce. Amigos
As Ulverston’s only Mexican restaurant, Amigos offers authentic Mexican cuisine on the doorstep of the Lake District. Relax in the Cellar Bar with a glass of sangria whilst you choose from the menu, before heading upstairs to the main restaurant, where you can sample classic Mexican food such as enchiladas, fajitas and paella. The Farmers
The recently refurbished Farmers Arms combines a restaurant, cocktail bar and classic pub all in the same building, offering locally sourced food, local ales, and a range of menus. Breakfast is available at The Farmers from 9 am, followed by their lunch menu, serving a fantastic selection of hot and cold baguettes. Hot Mango Cafe
The Hot Mango Cafe offers a delicious all-day breakfast and lunch menu seven days a week, ranging from Eggs Benedict and full English breakfasts to nachos and sharing platters, as well as a Sunday lunch menu. The Hot Mango also offers a bistro style dining experience on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings, with a ‘Bring Your Own Bottle’ policy if you’d like a drink to accompany your meal. Bici Cafe
Ulverston’s Bici Café, situated in an old bike shop, offers fantastic Italian food and authentic wood-fired pizzas, which you can watch being prepared right in front of you. With a brunch menu offering a range of food, from bacon butties to olives, as well as an evening menu boasting an impressive range of pizzas, Bici combines traditional café food with classic Italian cuisine. Poppies Cafe
Poppies Café serves delicious breakfasts and light lunches, and are committed to using locally sourced products from local traders. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday afternoons, Poppies also offer an ‘Afternoon Cheese’ experience, a twist on the traditional afternoon tea with a selection of cheeses served alongside artisan crackers and chutney, pies and sausage rolls, along with non-alcoholic presse.
Gillam’s Tearoom
The original Gillam’s greengrocers opened on Market Street in 1892, and the Gillam’s we see in Ulverston today is run by members of the same family, who have carried on the family tradition but combined the traditional greengrocers with an organic tea room. Gillam’s tea room offers traditional food such as sandwiches, soups and scones, all made with locally sourced, organic ingredients. Their menu includes a wide range of vegetarian and vegan options, as well as offering gluten-free options and catering for any other dietary requirements. They also provide organic loose leaf teas and a selection of coffees from around the world.
The Chippy Bank
No trip to Ulverston would be complete without a visit to the iconic Chippy Bank. Serving fantastic traditional battered fish and chips, sausage and chips, burgers, fish cakes, pies and much more, you can choose to either take your food away or dine in at the Chippy Bank. Their menu isn’t available online, but do stop by and have a look at what they have on offer – you’ll be able to smell their delicious chips from the end of King’s Street!
